How to Apply

Join us next semester

Depending on your affiliation, you will follow a certain application procedure. Check below to see which applies to you. We aim to inform you of your application results within 3-4 weeks after receiving your application.

  • Students from universities that are not partnered with VU Amsterdam or do not qualify for their university's exchange partnership with VU Amsterdam, i.e. "free movers" or "direct enrollments"
  • Students from providers and partner universities who have an official study abroad partnership with VU Amsterdam
  • Individuals not currently enrolled at a university but seeking academic or professional development opportunities

We gladly welcome applicants from non-traditional backgrounds or in unique familial or educational cicrumstances. Please email us to explain your specific situation.

  • Bachelor applicants must be at least in their second year. Master applicants must have a completed Bachelor degree. Applicants not currently enrolled at a university should have completed at least a Bachelor degree.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 based on a 4.0 American scale; comparable to an A or B average on the ECTS system.
  • Official English language test scores for non-native English speakers are only required for students who wish to take Master-level courses: TOEFL score paper based 580, computer-based 232, internet-based 92, or IELTS 6.5.
  • Apply directly through your provider or university
  • Your provider or university will review and send us your materials

Our staff will check the following:

  1. Your application is complete and includes all required documents;
  2. You meet our standard admission criteria;
  3. You meet all entry requirements for your course choices.

Note:

  • During the application phase you will be pre-approved for your course selection based on entry requirements, target audience, and recommended background knowledge.
  • Courses are finalized after the course lists and timetables for the current academic year are posted online. The course lists for each academic year are posted in July and the timetables are posted a few months before the start of each semester, meaning that students applying for the fall semester will apply using courses from the previous academic year.
  • Until the course lists and timetables for the current academic year are posted online your course choices are considered provisional and subject to change. Once the course lists and timetables for the current academic year are posted online we will send instructions for how to check if your pre-approved selections are still on offer and if they overlap in the timetable. In some cases you may need to use a back-up course or choose new course(s) if your pre-approved selection(s) are no longer on offer or if they overlap.
  • Our staff will enroll you in your final course selection after you have checked for availability and overlaps.
  • If you choose a minor program then courses in minor programs are guaranteed to never overlap in the timetable.

If you are applying individually as a student whose university does not have an official partnership with VU Amsterdam, or as a student who does not qualify for your university's exchange partnership with VU Amsterdam, then please follow the following steps.
