How to Apply

Join us next semester

Depending on your affiliation, you will follow a certain application procedure. Check below to see which applies to you. We aim to inform you of your application results within 3-4 weeks after receiving your application.

  • Students from universities which do not have an exchange partnership with VU Amsterdam, often referred to as free mover students;
  • Students from universities who are not eligible to qualify for their university's exchange partnership with VU Amsterdam;
  • Students from providers and partner universities;
  • Individuals not currently enrolled at a university but seeking academic or professional development opportunities.
  • Bachelor applicants must be at least in their second year of undergraduate study. Master applicants must have a completed Bachelor degree. Applicants not currently enrolled at a university should have completed at least a Bachelor degree.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 based on a 4.0 American scale; comparable to an A or B average from European ECTS system.
  • Official English language test scores for non-native English speakers are only required for students who wish to take Master-level courses: TOEFL score paper based 580, computer-based 232, internet-based 92, or IELTS 6.5.

If you are applying via the University of Denver, Wellesley College, EDU, IEC, College Contact, or ACM then please follow the following steps.

  • Apply directly through your provider or university
  • Your provider or university will review and send us your materials
  • Our staff will check the following:
  1. Your application is complete and includes all required documents;
  2. You meet our standard admission criteria;
  3. You meet all entry requirements for your course choices.
Please note:
  • Courses are finalized after the new course lists and timetables are posted online. The new course lists for each academic year are posted in July and the timetables are posted a few months before the start of each semester (July for fall and December for spring).
  • This means that courses for fall applicants will be finalized in July and courses for spring applicants will be finalized in December.
  • In the application phase our staff will pre-approve you for your course choices assuming they match your study level and you meet all entry requirements. We will inform you if you need to make changes to your course selection.
  • Until the new course lists and timetables are posted your courses are considered provisional and subject to change. For this reason we suggest having backups and getting home university approval for more courses than you think you will need.
  • Please regularly check your junk folder in case our emails are flagged as spam.

If you are applying individually or as a free mover whose university does not have an exchange contract or official partnership with VU Amsterdam, or as an individual or free mover who doesn't qualify for your university's exchange partnership with VU Amsterdam, then please follow the following steps. These steps also apply to students who are not currently enrolled in university:
